The ignition lock cylinder is the cylindrical tumbler and key that is used to power on and start the vehicle. Replace an ignition lock cylinder. With use and age an ignition lock cylinder can wear down or lock up and need to be replaced. The ignition lock cylinder is usually located on the right side of steering.

Ignition lock cylinders activate the ignition switch to help power up the accessory circuit fuel pump and computer system when starting the vehicle. But for decades the driver had sole control of vehicle starting via an ignition switch and lock cylinder located on the side of the steering column. Tighten two screws on top of the lock cylinder replace the ignition lock cylinder cover and replace the steering column covers. This cylinder is an interchangeable core that can wear over time and make it difficult to start.

Before you reconnect the battery make sure your new ignition lock cylinder moves to all four positions with the new key. In this video i show you a couple of methods you can use to fix a stuck or sticky ignition lock cylinder or if that fails to remove it with or without a key. While many newer vehicles are now being manufactured with push button and keyless power and starting systems traditional ignition lock cylinders are still commonly found on many road going cars and trucks.
